Johan Grøttumsbråten

Johan Pedersen Hagbart Grøttumsbråten ( born February 12, 1899 in Sørkedalen in Oslo, † January 24, 1983 in Vestre Aker ) was a Norwegian skier who was successful especially in cross-country skiing and Nordic combined. During his career he has been three times Olympic champion and along with these medals total of six times world champion.

Career

His first success was achieved Grøttumsbråten at the Norwegian Championships 1922 in Gjøvik, where behind Thor Leif Einar Haug and Landvik he won the bronze medal in the Nordic combined. Two years later he started in the Olympic Winter Games in 1924 in Chamonix -Mont- Blanc. After about 18 km, he won the silver medal in cross country, he was able to win in the Nordic combined and over 50 km of cross-country skiing bronze respectively.

In the Norwegian Championships in 1926 in Drammen Grøttumsbråten won his first and only national title in the combination before in Nordic World Ski Championships 1926 in Lahti his first world title won in the combination a short time later. In ski jumping individual he missed a medal narrowly and finished fourth. In the same year he also won the combination single competition at Holmenkollen.

Two years later Grøttumsbråten went at the Olympic Winter Games in 1928 in St. Moritz again about 18 km cross-country skiing and Nordic combined at the start and was superior in both disciplines, Olympic gold medalist and also world champion, as the Olympic Games were also seen as Nordic World Ski Championships. 1929 was Grøttumsbråten at Holmenkollen for the fourth time at the top of the combination competition. He also won at the Norwegian Championships 1929 in Kongsberg silver behind Hans Vinjarengen.

In the Nordic World Ski Championships 1931 in Oberhof Grøttumsbråten again won the title more than 18 miles and in the combination before he again chose the Holmenkollen ski festival, the combination itself and thus finished first and so far the only one this competition five times as the winner.

In his last Olympic Winter Games 1932 in Lake Placid Grøttumsbråten was again able to win the combination with now 32 years. In cross-country skiing over 18 km, it could not defend his title and finished sixth. It was his only Olympic competition in which he failed to win a medal.
