John Huyler

John Huyler attended the public schools in Tenafly. After that, he was until 1846 in New York working in the construction industry, where he advanced from simple mason to contractors. In 1846, Huyler moved to New Jersey, where he worked in agriculture. Since 1855 he lived in Hackensack. There he entered the trade and the timber business. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party. Huyler was a member and Chairman of the County Council in Bergen County. In the years 1849-1851 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly; In 1851 he was president of the house. From 1854 to 1857 he served as a judge in a court of appeal.
