Koto, Tokyo

Kōtō (Japanese江东 区, Kōtō -ku, Koto City engl. ) Is one of 23 districts in the east of Japan Tokyo Prefecture. It is located in the southeast of Tokyo, the capital of Japan.

Geography

Kōtō lies to the east of the city center, between the Sumida in the west and the Arakawa to the east. The two rivers form the border of the districts of Chūō in the West and in the East Edogawa. To the north lies Sumida, south of Tokyo Bay. Much of the area of the district has only emerged since the Meiji Restoration through land reclamation.

The main neighborhoods in the district are Kameido, Kiba, Kiyosumi, Monzen - nakacho and Shirakawa. Also the development area Ariake in port ( part of Odaiba ) belongs to the district Kōtō.

History

The "Special" Kōtō district was created on March 15, 1947 by merging the boroughs Fukagawa and Joto the city of Tokyo.

As in all of Tokyo both the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and the bombing at the end of World War II have destroyed nearly all the buildings in the district.

The council has an authorized strength of 44 members and is in uniform regional elections ( most recently in 2011 ) selected. The mayor is also elected in uniform regional elections; 2011, the former prefecture MPs Takaaki Yamazaki was re-elected with LDP Kōmeitō support for a second term.

For the Prefecture Parliament is the Kōtō -ku four- mandate constituency; at the last election in 2013, the four seats went to candidates of LDP, Kōmeitō, JCP and Minna no Tō.

The district forms the constituency Tokyo 15 for the Shūgiin, the lower house of the national parliament. 2012 won Mito Kakizawa the constituency for the Minna no Tō - 2013 he joined the breakaway Yui no Tō. Kakizawas father Koji had represented the constituency until 2003.
