Arakawa, Tokyo

Arakawa (Japanese荒 川 区, -ku ) is one of the 23 city wards of Tokyo, capital of Japan. The name of the district is derived from the eponymous river.

History

During the Edo period, the district was still rural. During the industrialization in the Meiji period settled on the banks of Arakawa factories. On 1 October 1932, the area was incorporated into the old Tōkyō and one of the then 35 districts.

Education

In Arakawa, the Tokyo Metropolitan University of Health Sciences (东京 都 立 保健 科学 大学, Tōkyō - toritsu hoken kakgaku daigaku ), Shuto Daigaku Tōkyō, the Tokyo Metropolitan College of Aeronautical Engineering (东京 都 立 航空 工业 高等 専 门 学校, is Tōkyō- toritsu koku Kōgyō Kōtō Semmon Gakko ) and the Arakawa Campus Tokyo Metropolitan College of Industrial Technology (东京 都 立 产业 技术 高等 専 门 学校, Tōkyō - toritsu Sangyo gijutsu Kōtō Semmon Gakko ).

Mayor of the district since 2004, the former reformist conservative (LDP / NFP / LP / KP ) member of Parliament Taiichirō Nishikawa. In 2012 he was elected for the third time. The local Parliament has regularly 32 members and is still in uniform regional elections ( last, 2011 ) was chosen.

For the Parliament of Tokyo prefecture is Arakawa Two mandate constituency at the last election in 2013, the seats went to Chishō Sakiyama (LDP ) and Kantaro Suzuki ( Kōmeitō ).

In the national lower house is Arakawa, forming the 14 Tokyo constituency together with Sumida, currently represented by the Liberal Democrat Midori Matsushima.
