Kotovsk, Ukraine

Kotowsk (Ukrainian Котовськ; Котовск Russian, Romanian Birzula ) is a city in southern Ukraine.

Kotowsk is located about 168 km north- west of Odessa and forms within the Odessa Oblast, a separate entity ( district-free city - city under Oblastverwaltung ) and is completely surrounded by Rajon Kotowsk.

The city was first mentioned in writing in 1779, at that time there was in place of the town a village which was called until 1935 Birsula ( Бірзула ). The construction of a railway line, which had a station at the village, the village developed rapidly since 1938, it has the status of a city, 1924-1940, the place was part of the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

The renaming in Kotowsk in 1935, the name derives from the Soviet Commander Grigori Kotowski, who died in 1925 at the site and received a mausoleum here.
