List of cities in Albania
The list of cities in Albania provides an overview of the development of the population of the larger cities of the South East European country of Albania. An overview of all communities in the country can be found in the communities in Albania list.
The data from the censuses of 1989, 2001 and 2011 are from the Instituti i Statistikës ( INSTAT ). The numbers from 2012 are an extrapolation of World Gazetteer based on these results. Estimates of the registry offices ( gjendjes civile ) of cities and towns in Albania are due to different methods of calculation in part between 30 and 80 percent over this information. So the registry office Tirana estimated the population of the capital in 2001 to 491 047, while INSTAT only 343 078 people counted in the census in the same year in the eleven districts. The difference is 43 percent. For the end of 2006 the Registry Office estimated the population of Tirana to 600,339. In the detection of inhabitants and when creating voter lists, it always comes back to irregularities. Errors mainly result from double registrations and registrations of persons with unknown whereabouts.
In the Albanian language, there are for each place name two variants, the indefinite and the definite form (eg Berat and Berati ).
The lower level of administrative units in Albania are the 65 cities ( bashkia ) and 309 municipalities ( komuna ). The country is further in 36 counties ( rrethi ) divided, but have no administrative duties today. Two to four circles each represent one of the twelve Qarke, the upper level of the local administration.
By far the largest agglomeration in Albania is Tirana with a population of 624 642 (as of September 2009). This means that almost 20 percent of the population of Albania in the capital region focused.
The following table lists the 65 cities, the results of the censuses ( VZ ) of 14 April 1989 and 1 April 2001, a calculation for January 1, 2012 and the preliminary results of the census of October 2011, the only places with more 10,000 inhabitants lists. Listed is also the circle and the Qark to which the city belongs. The population figures refer to the actual city without suburban belt. These figures are in part significantly from other statistical sources and election outcomes, so they should be treated with caution.
