Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann

Miguel d' Escoto Brockmann ( born February 5, 1933, Los Angeles ) is a Nicaraguan politician, diplomat and suspended Catholic priest. From September 2008 to September 2009 he was President of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Brockmann was from 1979 to 1990 Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua, in the cabinet of Daniel Ortega.

In 1987, he received the Thomas Merton Award for peace and social justice.

In September 2009, Brockmann handed over during a ceremony at the presidential palace in La Paz, Bolivia three international politicians Awards of the General Assembly of the United Nations: Evo Morales, the Bolivian president, as "World Hero of Mother Earth"; Fidel Castro, Cuban president until 2008, when "World Hero of Solidarity ", and Julius Nyerere, late President of Tanzania, "World Hero of Social Justice".
