Jan Eliasson

Jan Eliasson ( born September 17, 1940 in Gothenburg ) is a Swedish diplomat and Social Democratic politician. He was between 24 April and the October 6, 2006 Foreign Minister of Sweden and from September 2005 to September 2006 President of the 60th Session of the UN General Assembly. Since 1 July 2012, he is Deputy UN Secretary-General.

Biography

Jan Eliasson studied in 1957 and 1958 as an exchange student in Indiana and made his 1962 graduation from the Swedish Naval Academy. In 1965 he received the Master 's degree from the Graduate School of the University of Gothenburg.

After studying Eliasson began his career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden and worked 1982-1983 as Adviser to the Prime Minister Olof Palme. 1983 to 1987 he served as Secretary-General for Political Affairs in the Swedish Foreign Ministry.

In 1980 Eliasson was part of a UN mission to mediate in the war between Iran and Iraq. In this capacity he worked until 1986. 1988 to 1992 he was Permanent Representative of Sweden to the United Nations in New York City, where he also served as personal representative of the UN Secretary General in the affairs of Iran / Iraq.

1991 Eliasson served as head of the working group of the UN General Assembly on issues of risk aversion (Emergency Relief ) and Vice-President of ECOSOC ( 1991-92 ). He also became the first Under Secretary ( Under Secretary ) for Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations in 1992. In this capacity he was in missions in Somalia, Sudan, Mozambique and the Balkans go. He was also active against the use of landmines.

Between 1994 and 1999 Eliasson served as State Secretary in the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During this time he developed an action plan for preventive crisis management, which was later applied to the Balkans. Since 2000, he was Ambassador of Sweden to the United States in Washington, DC

On 13 June 2005 Eliasson was elected unanimously as the future president of the UN General Assembly. He took this function on 17 September 2005 during the opening of the series of meetings of the General Assembly.

Jan Eliasson is committed to a " veto - free culture " in the United Nations: New permanent members of the Security Council should no longer receive a veto, the recent veto powers should only use their in exceptional cases, for example when it comes to genocide to stop.

On 27 March 2006 he was appointed as successor to the retiring Laila Freivalds to the Foreign Minister of Sweden. He assumed this position on 24 April 2006, but retained his position at the United Nations until September. After the Social Democrats had lost the election in September 2006, Eliasson handed the presidency to Carl Bildt samlingspartiet of the Moderata.

From December 2006, Eliasson was UN Special Envoy for Darfur.
