Location and economic

Montferland is located southwest of Doetinchem and east of Zevenaar, directly on the border with the German state of North Rhine -Westphalia. ' s-Heer Mountain, Stokkum Beek and lie on beautiful wooded area Montferland, on the German border, not far from Elten and Emmerich am Rhein. Didam, Nieuw- Dijk and especially the typical farming village Azewijn are a little further north in the area of ​​De Liemers. The A12 motorway, which in Beek exceeds the German border and the German A 3 Arnhem - merges Oberhausen, has several trips into the community, including two German (including exit 3 towards ' s-Heer mountain). History

The municipality was created as part of a municipal reform on 1 January 2005 by merging the municipalities Didam and Bergh.

The town of 's -Heer Mountain is a small town, the Huis Bergh order, the ancestral home of the Lords of Bergh, originated in the Middle Ages. In 1379 it became a town, and later even a mint money. The house where the coins were minted, still exists. ' s-Heer mountain was walled long time and had only two city gates. The castle, called Huis Bergh, came in 1912 in the hands of the wealthy textile magnate JH van Heek, who brought his private art collection there.

In Didam several Roman coins were found during archaeological excavations. At the time of Christ the Germanic Chamavi had a settlement there.

The villages Azewijn, Zeddam and Braamt also been set up since the Middle Ages.
