Oliveira de Azeméis is a city ( Cidade ) and a circle ( concelho ) in Portugal with 12,164 inhabitants (as of 30 June 2011).

History

The Roman roads of Olissipo ( Lisboa) to Bracara oppidum Augusta (Braga ) and that of Conímbriga to Porto crossed here. Findings also indicate a settlement from the 7th to the 10th century by Arab and Berber Mozarabs. For the first time officially mentioned was the present-day town 922 as Villa Olivaria. Since 1799 Oliveira de Azeméis is an independent circuit. The former Vila ( town ) was raised in 1984 to the city. Since 2008 she is listed as part of the extended metropolitan region of Porto.

Culture and sights

Among the architectural monuments of the city is built in the 18th century, to mention a chapel from the 16th century Igreja Matriz church declining main de Oliveira de Azeméis (also Igreja de São Miguel). In Oliveira de Azeméis a number of industrial plants are located, especially shoe factories, metal processing, plastics processing, suppliers to the car industry, textile industry, mattresses and glass manufacturers. Also, the food industry can be found here, especially companies in the dairy industry and the rice processing. Among the best known company is one of manufacturer of household appliances Flama.

In addition to industry are agriculture, management and trade of importance. It is grown mainly maize, rice and grains in a circle, to vegetables and more. These cattle management, and tourism also plays a role, albeit subordinate.

The site has removed its own connection to the A32 motorway and 11 km above the national road N224 from the connection point Estarreja the A1.
