Past Masters are two albums ( Past Masters Volume One and Past Masters · · Volume Two ) of the British rock band The Beatles, who were simultaneously published on 7 March 1988.

Shortly before the release of the two albums, all the Beatles albums released the EMI for the first time on CD. These publications were the songs that the Beatles released separately on singles, B- sides or EPs or who were otherwise not available on the regular albums, ignored and instead were in chronological order on the two albums "Past Masters Volume One · " and "Past Masters Volume Two · " brought out. The aim of the publication of the "Past Masters " albums was that all the songs of the Beatles should be available on compact disc.

The majority of the songs on the album can be heard in stereo, even though they were originally available in their first publication in mono only. The EMI reached back for most of the songs on stereo versions that were made ​​on the occasion of other publications ( after 1970 ). However, part way and mono versions were used, although stereo mixes of the corresponding pieces were available (for example, From Me to You or She loves you ).

On 9 September 2009, the album was released again as part of a re-release of the entire Beatles catalog, which has been subjected to a remastering. Past Masters was also republished here, but the two albums previously available individually Volume One and Volume Two were combined to make a double album. At the same time all the songs were - if available - replaced by stereo versions. The album was also part of The Beatles Stereo Box Set.

On 9 September 2009, the box set The Beatles appeared in mono, in addition to all mono versions of the Beatles albums, the exclusive album Mono Masters contains, on which are heard all mono versions of the Beatles singles. In addition, five previously unreleased mono mixes are comprised of songs that were made ​​for a Yellow Submarine EP.
