Phu Wiang District

Amphoe Phu Wiang ( Thai: อำเภอ ภูเวียง ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district ) in the province of Khon Kaen. The Khon Kaen Province is located in the northeast region of Thailand, the Isaan.

Geography

Neighboring districts are ( from northeast clockwise): Amphoe the Ubolratana, Nong Ruea, Chum Phae, Wiang Kao and Nong Na Kham in the province of Khon Kaen and Amphoe Non Sang Province Nongbua Lamphu.

History

In the late 1970s have been found in Northeast Thailand several fossils of dinosaurs. Early 1990s, was first discovered in the district of Phu Wiang a 15 meters long and three meters high dinosaurs in Thailand, so it was named after the county, and in honor of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Phuwiangosaurus Sirindhornae. A museum has been established in the vicinity of the archaeological site.

Attractions

  • The Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum - ( พิพิธภัณฑ์ ไดโนเสาร์ ภูเวียง ) - part of the " Phu Wiang Dinosaur Fossil Study and Research Centre ", with exhibitions about the origin of the earth, geology, fossils and natural models of dinosaurs.
  • The National Park Phu Wiang ( อุทยานแห่งชาติ ภูเวียง ) - with trails for tourists to the localities of Phuwiangosaurus.

Administrative units

Amphoe Phu Wiang is ( tambon) divided into eleven municipalities, which in turn in 114 village communities ( Muban ) are divided.

There are three small towns ( thesaban tambon) in the district:

  • Phu Wiang ( Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล ภูเวียง ) consists of parts of the tambon Phu Wiang,
  • Na Chum Saeng ( Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล นา ชุมแสง ) consists of the whole tambon Na Chum Saeng,
  • Nong Kung Thanasan ( Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล หนอง กุ ง ธนสาร ) consists of the whole tambon Nong Kung Thanasan.

There are also nine administrative organizations ( " Tambon Administrative Organizations" - TAO, Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล ).

Note: The missing geocodes are among the tambon which now belong to the Amphoe Wiang Kao and Nong Na Kham.
