Geography

Geographical Location

Predlitz -Turrach is in the upper Mur valley in the Gurktaler Alps. Predlitz and Einach located along the banks of the river Mur, Predlitz leads from the main road 95 along the Turrach brook in the south on the town Turrach up to Turracherhöhe at an altitude of 1,763 m. The lowest point of the municipality is located 890 meters above sea level on the Mur in Einach, the highest is the peak of Eisenhut in 2441 m.

Politically, the community forms the southwestern closure of the province of Styria: West of the church is the boundary between the provinces of Styria and Salzburg, the Salzburg neighboring municipalities are Thomatal and Ramingstein Tamsweg in the west and the north. In the south Predlitz -Turrach borders the municipalities Albeck, Reichenau and Krems in Carinthia. Neighboring communities to the east are the Styrian municipality barn on the river Mur and German - handles in Carinthia.

The municipality comprises the cadastral Einach and Predlitz.

The population has been declining for a long time; were counted here in 1869 still 1369 people, in 2001 it was only 899, of which 449 in Predlitz, 250 and 200 in Einach in Turrach. The northern part of Turracherhöhe part of the territory of the hamlet Turrach.

There are the cadastral Einach and Predlitz that were originally each independent local churches. As of 1 January 1969, they were united to the community Predlitz -Turrach.

History

End of the 6th century Slavs settled on the upper reaches of the river Mur, in this time falls the foundation of the settlement Predlitz. The place name arose from prědělъ Slavic term, which can mean pass or watershed, and probably is a reference to a path on the Turracherhöhe. The place name for Turrach derives from the ancient name " Durrach " for a forest area.

The municipality Predlitz was built in 1849 /50.

Economy and infrastructure

Traffic

Through the municipal area leads the Turracher Road ( B 95 ), the Predlitz -Turrach with the federal states of Salzburg ( to the west ) and Carinthia connects ( in the south). In Predlitz branches from the B 95 Murau Road ( B 97 ) in an easterly direction for special occasion from.

Also located in Predlitz a station of the Murtalbahn.

Established businesses

The municipality consists of 58% forest and 27% of pastures, about 8 % is used for agriculture. The operated from 1660 in Turrach mining was middle of the 19th century its heyday and has long been the most important economic factor of the community, but was set in 1909.

The ironworks Turrach

In 1662 Johann Adolf Graf zu Schwarzenberg was built in place a " raft oven". This then presented a special addition to the otherwise common " Stucköfen " dar.

When Johann Adolf II, Prince of Schwarzenberg in 1861 decided to build a Bessemer steel plant in Turrach, this meant another pioneering achievement in the iron and steel industry.

With the help of a tiltable converter ( " Bessemer " ) could be generated in Turrach in 1863 the first Bessemer steel pretty good in Austria. In 1866 the work was extended by as much as two converters. However, in the following years, the secluded location worked out always adverse. The competition was finally too big through the formation of larger companies and it came in 1898 to the closure of Austria's oldest Bessemer hut.
