Protvino

Protwino (Russian Протвино ) is a town in Moscow Oblast, Russia. It is located 116 km south of Moscow and 15 km west of Serpukhov on the river Protva, right on the border with the Kaluga oblast, and has 37 308 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

History

Protwino was created in 1960 as a settlement near the Physics Research Institute, founded at the same time. Originally called Serpukhov -7, Protwino received on 22 January 1965 Status of urban-type settlement and the modern place- name derived from the river Protva.

In 1989, Protwino awarded the city status.

Economy and Transport

The main employer is Protwinos the Physics Research Institute (official name: Research Institute for Physics of High Energies, russ Институт физики высоких энергий ), whose proton particle accelerator was until 1972 the world's largest of its kind. In addition, a branch of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is based in Protwino. Due to the importance of scientific facilities for the city, it has the status of a Naukograd, literally "City of Science ".

Furthermore, there is in Protwino food, furniture and electrical engineering industry. A software development company is active in the city.

Major transport connections, even to Moscow, there are over the neighboring Serpukhov, where connection is made to the highway M2 and to the railway Moscow - Kursk.
