Already in pre-Roman times built the Taurisci a road over the Radstadt Tauern, which probably was passable even in Norican time. The used by the Romans finished road which later evolved into one of the most important Alpine road at all, after extensive improvements and upgrades were carried out partially. Both ramps pass several Roman milestones from Schaidberger marble have been preserved as landmarks of renewal. Over the years, the road fell into disrepair, however, so that the ore transport almost came to a halt on it.

The Roman Road

An extensive renovation of the Radstadt Tauern mountain pass was made in the Roman Empire under Septimius Severus ( 193-211 ). The former governor of Rome to Pannonia and later Emperor built several alpine roads. The new route of the Tauriskerstraße led thereby to a large extent on the route of the old road. The particular pass near new trassierte section even brought a reduction to the old path with it. The Radstadt Tauern pass road was built as a military road first order to create a fast link with Italy at the constant defensive battles of the Roman legions on the northern border.

With the help of sweeping the Roman road builders overcame a height difference of 725 meters at an average gradient of 8.25 %. Some researchers see in the 2.5 -meter-wide road a mule; nevertheless is likely that he was passable by carts in overall length, including over the pass of time. Large slabs formed the road surface, high limit blocks limited the road, in which an inclination of the road surface for the water flow caused. In the Roman Straßenitinerarien the passport of the Radstadt Tauern " In Alpe " registered under the name; a term that at least called in late antiquity the Roman mansio in the immediate pass nearby. " In Alpe " was also the point 16 miles of the road.
