Rémilly, Moselle

Rémilly ( German Remelach ) is a commune with 2134 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region.

Geography

The municipality is located on the French Nied Rémilly, 23 kilometers southeast of Metz.

History

The town was first mentioned in 840 as Romeliacum, the German form of the name is assigned as Rymloch 1331 and 1445 as Remelach. Rémilly is always on the French side of the historic German - French language border, but was as a result of the German - French War from 1871 to 1918 the German Reich. From 1915 to 1918 Remelach was also the official German name.

During World War II Rémilly was occupied on 16 June 1940 to 11 November 1944 by the Germans, who sold a portion of the inhabitants and a German civil administration einrichteten.
