Rollin M. Daggett

Rollin Mallory Daggett ( born February 22, 1831 in Richville, St. Lawrence County, New York, † November 12, 1901 in San Francisco, California ) was an American politician. Between 1879 and 1881 he represented the state of Nevada in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years

In 1837, Rollin Daggett moved with his father in northwestern Ohio. He attended schools in Defiance. He also made an apprenticeship in the printing trade. In 1849 he joined the gold rush and moved to California. Until 1852 he prospected for gold. In 1860 he founded, together with a number of partners, the newspaper " San Francisco Mirror", which then merged with the " San Francisco Herald ".

Political career

In 1862, Daggett moved to the Nevada Territory, where he settled in Virginia City. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. In 1863 he sat in the territorial Government. In 1864 he was also involved in the publication of the newspaper " Territorial Enterprise ". Between 1867 and 1876 he was Protokollist at the Federal District Court.

In the congressional elections of 1878 Rollin Daggett was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. There he took over from the March 4, 1879 Thomas Wren. Two years later he was defeated George Williams Cassidy, the candidate of the Democratic Party. He was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1881.

On July 1, 1882 Daggett was appointed American ambassador in the former Kingdom of Hawaii. This office he held until April 10, 1885. Thereafter he devoted himself in San Francisco the newspaper business. There Rollin Daggett is also deceased in November 1901.
