The Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro (Latin: Sancti Sebastiani Archidioecesis Fluminis Ianuarii ) is a located in Brazil Roman Catholic archdiocese headquartered in Rio de Janeiro in Rio de Janeiro.

History

The Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro was founded on July 19, 1575 by Pope Gregory XIII. out of territory of the Diocese of São Salvador da Bahia built as Territorialprälatur São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. On November 16, 1676 Territorialprälatur São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro was elevated to diocese and the Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia is a suffragan. The elevation to the archbishopric was on 27 April 1892. The Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro came into his story several times parts of its territory from the creation of new dioceses.

Since 1905 all bishops of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro were created cardinals, so São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro is considered traditionally associated with the cardinal bishopric.

The Archdiocese is backing the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC - Rio).
