Rudy Insanally

Samuel Rudolph Insanally ( born June 23, 1936 in Georgetown, Guyana ) is a Guyanese politician and diplomat. He was from 2001 to 2008 Minister of Foreign Affairs of his country and sat in front of the President of the 48th United Nations General Assembly in 1993/94.

Early Career

After the successful completion of the study of modern languages ​​and international relations at Georgetown, London, Paris and Brussels, he taught French and Spanish at various universities in Jamaica and in Guyana until 1966 he entered the diplomatic service of his country. 1966 to 1970 he worked at several Guyanese embassies and international organizations in America, such as the OAS and CARICOM. 1970 to 1982 he represented Guyana as Permanent Representative to the European Communities and was also ambassador to Belgium, with concurrent accreditation to Austria, Sweden and Norway. He played an important role in the negotiations of the second Lomé Convention of 1981 between the EEC and the ACP countries at this time. At the same time he served as from 1972 to 1978 as Ambassador to Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador.

In 1982 he returned to Georgetown to direct the Department of Western Hemisphere Affairs at the State Department. At the same time he was ambassador to Colombia and Consul General in various Caribbean countries.

At the United Nations

In 1987, he joined the post as Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations. The 48th UN General Assembly elected him on 21 September 1993, its president, his term lasted until 20 September 1994.

Back in Guyana
