Rutland

Rutland is an independent management unit ( Unitary Authority) in England and is bordered to the west and north by Leicestershire, on the northeast by Lincolnshire and southeast by Northamptonshire.

The largest expansion in north-south direction is 29 km in west-east direction and 27 km. Seen from the Population ago Rutland is the smallest unitary authority in England (only the City of London is smaller) and is of the 350 districts to 345 place.

The two main towns are Oakham, the county seat, and Uppingham. In the center of the county there is a large reservoir, Rutland Water, an important nature reserve which serves as a wintering place for geese birds and breeding grounds for fish eagles. The town of Stamford is situated across the border in a protruding part of Lincolnshire.

Rutland's biggest employer is the American shipping merchant Lands' End, whose European headquarters is located in Oakham.

In the 1970s, Eric Idle did together one of Monty Python, Neil Innes of the Bonzo with Dog Doo Dah band to produce a TV comedy series called Rutland Weekend Television.

History

The northwestern part of the county is in the Domesday Book as Rutland, a detached part of Nottinghamshire, recorded. The southeastern part is listed as so-called wapentake of Wicelsea in Northamptonshire. As an independent Rutland County was first mentioned in 1159.

In the 19th century Rutland was divided into the dog reds Alstoe, East, Martinsley, Oakham and Wrandike.

Rutland is one of the traditional counties and is also the smallest among them. In 1888 it was converted to an administrative county (administrative county ). In the course of municipal reform of 1974 Rutland became a district of Leicestershire; 1997 was reversed and Rutland has since been a unitary authority. It but remains one of the ceremonial counties.
