Shchyolkovo

Schtscholkowo (Russian Щёлково ) is a Russian city in Moscow Oblast. It lies on the River Klyazma around 35 km north-east of Moscow, has 110 411 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

History

Schtscholkowo emerged from a same village that was known since the 1520s and was formerly in the possession of Sergiev Poss vein Trinity Monastery. Since the 18th century, the village became an important artisan village, mainly because of the operation there silk weaving. First textile mills emerged in Schtscholkowo mid-19th century. One of them was the Prussian manufacturer Ludwig Rabeneck from Elberfeld (now Wuppertal to ) founded and still exists today under the name of Kalinin Cotton Combine Schtscholkowo ( Щёлковский хлопчатобумажный комбинат имени М. И. Калинина ).

1925, the current Schtscholkowo from the former village Schtscholkowo and some surrounding villages was formed. At the same time the city received city rights.

Economy and infrastructure

Even today, plays the textile industry in Schtscholkowo an important role, other important industries are the chemical and engineering industries.

Schtscholkowo has a railway connection to a secondary route of the Trans -Siberian Railway. There are regular train services from Schtscholkowo and the Yaroslavl station in Moscow.

At the southeastern edge of the town is the military airfield Chkalovsky.

Twin Cities

Schtscholkowo maintains since 1992 Hemer twinned. Another sister city is Browary in Ukraine.
