Soto del Real

Soto del Real, formerly Villa de Chozas, is a municipality in the comarca of the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares in the Autonomous Community of Madrid in Spain. It is located 43 km north of the city of Madrid.

Geographical location

Soto Real is located 2 km north-east of the dam Santillana south of the Sierra de Guadarrama and is bordered to the west by the UNESCO biosphere of the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares.

Neighboring communities

Soto is bordered to the east by Miraflores de la Sierra, in the south of Colmenar Viejo, on the west by Manzanares el Real and in the north Rascafría.

Boroughs

The municipality is divided into the vilage Soto del Real, Sotosierra and Los Rancajales, as the settlements Peña Real and Puente Real.

Climate

Climate of Soto is oceanic continental with hot summers and cold, rainy ( snow) winters.

Population

Of the 7,865 registered inhabitants in 2006, 89.14 % were Spanish citizens. 4.35% were from Europe ( 2.53% non-Spanish EU citizens ). 3.8% were from South and Central America, 2.26% from Africa, 0.28% from North America and 0.13 % from Asia.

The development is characterized by strong growth. Reasons are the strong economic growth of the Madrid region, which internal migration and immigration from outside Spain encourages return migration of Spanish emigrants from Europe, as well as the urban exodus of the people of Madrid.

Languages

About 90 % of the population speak Castilian ( the official language ) as mother tongue. Because of their origin are likely to 8-10 % of the population have a different mother tongue and speak Castilian best as a second language.
