Spencer G. Millard

Spencer Gurdon Millard (* July 10, 1856 in Ionia, Ionia County, Michigan, † October 24, 1895 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American politician. In 1895 he was Deputy Governor of the State of California.

Career

In 1877, Spencer Millard graduated from Hillsdale College in his home state of Michigan. He then worked for three years in Carson City as a teacher. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. In 1887 he moved to Los Angeles, where he also practiced law. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. In 1892 he was chairman of the city's Republican National Congress for elections to the Mayor of Los Angeles.

1894 Millard was elected to the side of James Budd for Lieutenant Governor of California. A position he has held since early 1895 until his death on 24 October of the same year. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. However, since January, he suffered from a flu, which escalated into pneumonia from which he never recovered. He was during his time as Lieutenant Governor not largely able to perform the official duties. He was then represented by his eventual successor William T. Jeter.
