Sudak

Sudak (Ukrainian and Russian Судак, Crimean Tatar Sudaq ) is a city in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in Ukraine, with 36,400 inhabitants ( 2004).

Sudak is a center of wine and sparkling wine production and a spa resort with about 15 sanatoriums.

History

Sudak was supposedly founded in 212 AD by Alani and was known by the Greek name Sugdeja. In the 6th century I. ( 482-565 ) on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian built a fortress. Since the late 7th century, the Khazars penetrated into the Crimea. In the period around 700 a Khazar governor is delivered with the Christian name of George in the city. In the Middle Ages the trade center was a major station of the Silk Road; the height of its importance it gained in the 12th and 13th centuries. During this time, Sudak was called ( Byzantines and Italians ) of different peoples also Surosch ( Slavs ), Soldaja or Soldaia.

Sudak was Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church, after which the Titularerzbistum Sugdaea back.

Since 1204 Sudak was actually a Venetian colony. In the 13th and 14th centuries the town was repeatedly plundered by Tatar - Mongols and destroyed, for the first time on 27 January 1223 but rebuilt quickly. In June 1365 location and the surrounding area were conquered by the Genoese. As of June 1475 Sudak belonged to the sphere of influence of the Ottoman Empire.

In 1783, Sudak came with the entire Crimea to the Russian Empire. 1804, the first school of the wine press in Russia was established in 1808 founded German settlers from Württemberg near the existing site a wine estate. During World War II Sudak was occupied by German troops from 1 November 1941 to 13 April 1944. Only in 1979 was the place Sudak city rights.
