Template: Infobox city in Portugal / maintenance / management location is empty Template: Infobox city in Portugal / Maintenance / Web page is blank Tabuaço is a small town ( Vila ) and a circle ( concelho ) in Portugal with 1790 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). He belongs to the Upper Douro Valley. This was in 1756 the first origin protected wine region in the world, and since 2001 has been part of the UNESCO world heritage.

History

Excavations prove the prehistoric settlement. From the time of the Romans some religious finds and remnants have been preserved a Roman road here. During the Reconquista of the village saw his resettlement. 1320 was the place as Tavuaço already an independent municipality. In the 16th century it received city rights, and became the seat of an independent circle, which was from 1836 to 1855 significantly increased the administrative reforms in the course.

Culture and sights

Among the monuments of the circle include a number of historic public buildings, estates and mansions, stone fountains, and a variety of religious buildings, including the monastery of São Pedro das Águias. The historical town center as a whole is a listed building.

To visit also the excavation of the Iron Age settlement Citânia Longa as a menhir, and preserved parts of the local Roman Road, all located in the town Longa.

Various marked loop trails and hiking routes lead through the landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage Alto Douro, the one that was especially known for port wine since 1756 the oldest demarcated wine region in the world.

Opened in 2009, Museu do Imaginário Duriense ( MiDu ) is the first of eleven planned museums around history, traditions and myths of the Douro region.
