Torrejón de Ardoz

Torrejón de Henares is a city in the Madrid region (Spain).

The city is situated in 568-600 meters altitude about 20 kilometers east of the capital halfway to Alcalá de Henares near Madrid Barajas Airport. She had on 1 January 2013 123 761 inhabitants already in on a strong upward trend. The city is connected by highway N-II and S -Bahn with Madrid.

The city's name comes from an ancient tower ( torreón ) ago, the had built here the citizens of Alcalá de Henares for border security. This fortress, as well as the first branch, dates from the 12th century. Until the 17th century the hamlet of Alcalá de Henares was assumed, then the archbishop of Toledo. Until the 20th century Torrejón de Henares remained largely rural community. From about 1960 numerous industrial companies and research institutions settled in the vicinity of U.S. airport in Torrejon, which accelerated the development of the city. The modern face of the city is reflected in a relatively young population: around 30 % of the population are between 20 and 35 years old.

In Torrejón there is a former American military airfield, now the civilian airport Madrid-Torrejón Airport, Spanish barracks and companies in the defense and IT industry, as well as the Satellite Centre of the European Union. The place is also popular due to its good transport connections with people who have their jobs in Madrid.
