Trikala (regional unit)

The Regional District of Trikala (Greek Periferiaki Enotita Trikalon, Aromanian Trikolj ) is one of the five regional districts of the Greek region of Thessaly with its headquarters in the city of Trikala. Until the Greek administrative reform of 2010, the territory had the status of a prefecture, which lost its powers to the region and the revised communities. Since then, the regional district Trikala sends nine MPs in the Thessalian Regional Council, has also, however, no political significance as a local authority. Trikala includes the municipalities Farkadona, Kalambaka, Trikala and Pyli.

Among the most important attractions in Trikala are the Meteora monasteries near Kalambaka, which are classified as World Heritage Site.
