United Nations Security Council Resolution 1714

Resolution 1714 of the UN Security Council is a resolution to the conflict in Darfur in western Sudan, which was adopted by the UN Security Council unanimously at its 5545th meeting on 6 October 2006.

The Security Council appealed to its previous resolutions on the situation in Sudan, and in particular resolutions 1590, 1627, 1653, 1663, 1679, 1706 and 1709.

Resolution 1714 calls on the parties to the Naivasha Agreement, a comprehensive peace agreement for the Southern Sudan from 9 January 2005 to comply with the relevant obligations and is particularly critical of the obstruction of UN employees by the Government of Sudan especially in the southern district of Abyei, and the violation of the peace agreement.

The resolution also the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS ) is extended to 30 April 2007, with subsequent renewals are intended.

The resolution text also welcomes the African Union's decision of 20 September 2006 to extend the mandate of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS ) until 31 December 2006 and encourages co-operation between UNMIS and AMIS.
