United Nations Security Council Resolution 1716

Resolution 1716 of the UN Security Council is a resolution on the situation in Georgia, which was adopted by the UN Security Council unanimously at its 5549th meeting, on 13 October 2006.

The Security Council referred to his, adopted since 1993, previous resolutions on Georgia, in particular, resolution 1666 of the UN Security Council on 31 March 2006.

With Resolution 1716, the mandate of the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia ( UNOMIG ) was extended until 15 April 2007. These observers mission was established in 1993 and had the time of adoption of resolution 1716 a total of 133 members (including 121 military observers and 12 civilian police officers).

The resolution made ​​Georgia partly responsible for a "new and tense situation " because of a police operation in the upper Kodori valley on 25 July 2006 and recalls that no Georgian or Abkhaz troops may stay there after the Armistice Agreement of 14 May 1994.

The resolution demanded indirectly better cooperation between UNOMIG and the CIS peacekeeping force ( CISPKR ) in Abkhazia.
