Uwe Unterwalder

Uwe Unterwalder ( born July 15, 1950 in Berlin ) is a former racing cyclist from the German Democratic Republic. In three Olympics, he won two silver medals starts and finished again fourth.

Unterwalder came 1966 TSC Berlin, where he trained under the silver medalist from 1960 Siegfried Köhler. 1971 won Unterwalder at the Road Cycling World Championships in the team pursuit silver medal together with Thomas Huschke, Heinz Richter and Herbert Richter behind the Italian four. The following year, the East German foursome won in the same occupation at the Munich Olympics, the silver medal behind the quad from the Federal Republic of Germany. After winning the 1974 Herbert Richter, Huschke and Unterwalder along with Klaus -Jürgen Grünke again World Championship silver behind the West German foursome. 1975 won Grünke, Huschke, Unterwalder and Norbert Dürpisch bronze at the World Championships. At the Olympic Games in Montreal occupied Dürpisch, Huschke, Unterwalder and Matthias Wiegand fourth place.

Unterwalder won from 1974 to 1977 four times in succession with the crew of the TSC Berlin GDR champion. At the World Championships in 1977 Unterwalder won his first medal in the individual pursuit, as he only lost in the final against Norbert Dürpisch. The East German team won gold in 1977 for the first time, but without Unterwalder. A year later the drivers from the GDR succeeded at the World Championships in Munich, the greatest success: In One Detlef Macha won before Dürpisch and Unterwalder. Only Unterwalder started from these three riders in the team, he won the world title along with Matthias Wiegand, Volker Winkler and Gerald Mortag. After 1979, the GDR four without Unterwalder won the third World Cup title in a row, the persecutor of the GDR were also favorites for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, but won the team from the Soviet Union.; Mortag, Unterwalder, Wiegand and Winkler received the silver medal.

For his sporting successes at the Summer Olympic Games in 1972 and 1980, he received in these years respectively to the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

Unterwalder was trained offset printer, but worked after his career as a waiter in Berlin. After the turn, he was co-owner of an establishment for the maintenance of motor vehicles.
