Geography

Wallerstein is located in the Augsburg region near Nördlingen im Ries formed by a meteorite impact. The 65 m high Wallerstein castle rock is the focal point in the village.

There are the following districts: Birkhausen, Ehringen, Munzingen, Wallerstein.

History

As Steinheim the village was first mentioned in 1238. He and the nearby castle Wallerstein were part of the Hohenstaufen power base. Around 1250, the ownership of the castle and the town went over to the House of Oettingen. In the 15th century the noble family built the place of their residence and called him to Wallerstein. 1500 was the awarding of the market law by Emperor Maximilian I.. 1648 the castle was destroyed by the Swedes and the ruling family built below the residential tract a new residence that received its present classical form 1804. With the Act of Confederation in 1806 the place came to the Kingdom of Bavaria. In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria, was born with the congregation of 1818, the current community.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1972, the formerly independent communities Ehringen and Munzingen were incorporated. On 1 July 1972, added Birkhausen.

  • Plague or Trinity Column, the landmark Wallerstein's in the center.
