Zarley Zalapski

Zarley Bennett Zalapski ( born April 22, 1968 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Swiss- Canadian ice hockey player (defender), who was most recently at Lausanne Hockey Club in the National League B under contract.

Career

As a junior he played for the Fort Saskatchewan Traders in the AJHL. Thanks to good performances, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL Entry Draft in 1986 in the first round in 4th place. He then played for the Canadian national hockey team and prepared over two years to the Olympic Games in Calgary before and finished with the team to fourth place.

At the end of the 1987/88 season, the Penguins brought him into the NHL. After playing only 15 games in the NHL was not until the next season his rookie season. He played a convincing round and was all- rookie elected jointly with Brian Leetch in the defense of the NHL teams. The offensively strong Zalapski became one of the best defenders in the league. In March 1991, he joined together with John Cullen to the Hartford Whalers. In return, among other things, Ron Francis and Ulf Samuelsson came to the Penguins.

Instead with Pittsburgh winning the Stanley Cup he now played in Hartford. There, he managed to achieve twice in a row over 50 points scorer as a defender. It was almost exactly three years in Hartford, but shortly before the end of the season 1993/94 he was discharged together with James Patrick and Michael Nylander for Gary Suter, Paul Ranheim and Ted Drury to the Calgary Flames.

In Calgary, he was not as successful as in previous years. The majority of the 1996/97 season he missed because of a knee injury. Again recover it went into the next season in February on to the Montreal Canadiens. Here Valeri Bure was a part of the swap transaction, who moved to Calgary for Zalapski. The time in Montreal was also unsuccessful, and so it went Zalapski 1998 to Europe. There he played in the 1998/99 season in the National League A for the ZSC Lions.

For the season 1999/2000 season, he accepted an offer of the New York Rangers back in the NHL, but managed not to jump into the team. He played instead in the IHL for the Long Beach Ice Dogs and the Utah Grizzlies. His NHL comeback yet succeeded in the course of the season with 12 games for the Philadelphia Flyers.

After he started the next season in the IHL with the Houston Aeros, he moved during the season 2000/ 01 to the Munich Barons in the German Ice Hockey League ( DEL). He spent the season in the Italian Meran follow before leaving for Björklöven IF in the Swedish HockeyAllsvenskan, the second division, played the 2002/03 season. After a return to North America to the Kalamazoo Wings in the UHL, he moved back to Switzerland. Thanks to the marriage with a Swiss woman he had obtained a Swiss passport and loaded henceforth no longer the foreigner quota.

In the 2005/06 season he played in at the Rapperswil -Jona Lakers HC Martigny and EHC Visp. At the end of last season, he was first appointed back as an active hockey player. But after the summer break, he decided to continue his career and held at EHC Olten and EHC Chur fit, before he was obliged by the beginning of September 2007 EHC Biel for the following season. For the 2009/10 season, he was taken from the Lausanne Hockey Club under contract.
