1916 South American Championship

The Campeonato Sudamericano of 1916 was the first South American championship in football and thus the first continental championship of national soccer teams worldwide. It took place from 2 to 17 July in Argentina instead. Although the first two games took place on July 9, 1916 even before the foundation of the South American federation CONMEBOL, it has been organized by this and counted as an official tournament. All four founding members of CONMEBOL participated in the tournament.

The games were held in the Cancha de Gimnasia y Esgrima the club Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima de Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires. The deciding game between Uruguay and Argentina, but was canceled due to " incidents " after 5 minutes and the next day at the gates of the city continued on the course of the Racing Club in Avellaneda, in its place today, the Estadio Presidente Perón is. Match Results

With one exception, all of the games were held in the Cancha de Gimnasia y Esgrima.

Uruguay was considered at that time as well as Argentina as the strongest team in South America. Both countries had already completed in their countries game history since 1902 about 40 games, while Chile and Brazil even before his eighth played his third game. Accordingly clearly was the prelude of Uruguay against Chile. Brazil met in his first game on Chile, but reached into his third countries play only a sobering draw.
