1949–50 French Division 2

The season 1949/50 was the eleventh staging of the professional French football Division 2 second-division champion Olympique Nîmes.

Were eligible to participate, the 16 clubs that were after the previous season went not into the first division have their professional status - had given up - voluntarily or forced. Then there were ever a Erstligaabsteiger and a newcomer, who had assumed professional status. This was - this was a first in the French professional football - a legally independent club, played for the second team of Olympique Marseille.

Thus played this season officially following 18 teams for the championship of Division 2:

  • Two teams from the far north (U.S. Valenciennes Anzin, AC Amiens ),
  • Two from Paris and the Champagne (CA Paris, AS Troyes - Savinienne )
  • One from the Northeast (Racing Club Franc- Comtois Besançon),
  • Five from the West (U.S. Le Mans, Nantes, Angers SCO, Le Havre AC, FC Rouen )
  • Eight from the southeast (Lyon Olympique Universitaire, AS Béziers, Olympique Alès, Nîmes Olympique, freshman GSC Marseille 2, SC Toulon, relegated AS Cannes -Grasse and Monaco ).

A direct ascent and descent depending on the sporting result achieved it had before the Second World War only given between first and second professional division; then a descent was introduced in the third- highest division for several years. In addition, a Zweitdivisionär could stay if he gave his license or has been taken from him. Existing amateur teams, however, could continue only for the following season ascend to Division 2 when they were given permission by the relevant association FFF to accept professional status.

Course of the season and Table

Each team wore against each group opponent a back and a leg off, even before a home crowd and once away. It was the two- point rule; case of a tie, the goal difference was the decisive factor for the placement. In France, the number of plus points is called when specifying the point ratio exclusively; Again, this is done in Germany in the days of the 2- point rule usual notation.

Respect of the substantial decisions clarity prevailed long before the last matchday. The ascent to the qualifying table spaces had early secured with Nîmes and Le Havre two teams that could dissociate the third-placed Erstligaabsteiger from Cannes to 16 or 12 points at the end. We saw something similar from the bottom of the overall standings, 16 points behind where Paris finally showed on the penultimate. However, although the CAP had only been able to leave behind a single team in the two previous seasons, this founding member of the professional league in 1932 operation remained under its president Marcel Langiller continue in line.

This season was a diminutive, dribbling winger named Raymond Kopaszewski who still debuted at Angers age of 17 and should evolve in the years to become one of the best footballers in Europe, the first as a paid player. In the 306 games of the Division 2 954 goals were scored; which corresponds to an average of 3.1 goals per game. The top scorer won Edmond Haan from Nîmes with 27 goals.

His professional status after the season was not a club, and it also received none from the third division a new license. Thus, only the two first division and SO Montpellier FC Metz were added to the following season.
