The 32nd Chess Olympiad 1996 was held from 2 October 1996 in Yerevan (Armenia ) on 15 September.

In the 32th Chess Olympiad in 1996 in Yerevan, 114 teams ( including Armenia Armenia B and C) were playing in the open group. The tournament was the sport and concert complex.

In the first three places, the teams came from Russia ( 38.5 board points), Ukraine (35) and from the United States (34).
The Olympic champion Russia played with the players Garry Kasparov (7 points from 9 games ), Vladimir Kramnik ( 4 ½ out of 9), Alexei Dreev (5 of 8 ), Peter Svidler ( 8 ½ out of 11, bronze), Evgeny Bareev ( 7 ½ out of 10, silver) and Sergei Rublevsky (6 of 9).
The German men came in 10th place and played with Artur Yusupov ( 8 ½ out of 13 ), Robert Hübner ( 6 ½ out of 10), Rustem Dautov (5 of 10 ), Eric Lobron ( 4 ½ out of 9 ), Jörg Hickl (4 of 7) and Christopher Lutz ( 4 ½ out of 7).
The Austrian men came at No. 48 and played with Nicholas Stanec ( 8 ½ out of 14 ), Georg Danner ( 6 ½ out of 11 ), Reinhard Lendwai ( 4 ½ out of 11 ), Michael Schlosser ( 3 of 9 ), Harald Casa Grande ( 6 of 11) and Leo Kwatschewsky on the sixth board, but this was not used.

Teams of women
In the women won Georgia (30 board points), followed by China ( 28.5 ) and Russia ( 28.5 ). Georgia joined with Maia Chiburdanidze ( 8 ½ points from 12 games), Nana Ioseliani (10 of 13, silver), Ketevan Arakhamia - Grant ( 8 out of 10, Gold) and Nino Gurieli ( 3 ½ out of 7).
The German women were ranked number 15 and played with Ketino Kachiani - Gersinska ( 6 ½ out of 13), Jordanka Micic ( 3 ½ out of 7 ), Marina Olbrich (7 of 12 ) and Bettina Trabert ( 6 ½ out of 10).

The Chess Olympiad is a team tournament. 14 rounds were played according to the Swiss System in Yerevan. In the Swiss system each evaluation teams are equal among themselves drawn. Each team (Team ) was per team fight use four players. The team competition four single points (board points) will be awarded, which are given in the following table of the 14 laps under the code of the opponent team. The code is a short code for the teams. The result of a team match, the team points (win = 2, draw = 1, loss = 0). In addition, the numbers of recovered, indecisive and lost battles are listed ( = -).
