Alfred is a male first name Old High German origin.

Origin and Meaning

The name came originally from the Old German name Alfrad. This consists of the two Old High German words alb, for nature spirit, and rad for counselors. The English version of the name Alfred learned in Britain, partly because of Alfred the Great, from the 9th century increasingly widespread. The English version was later re- entrance into German.

Dissemination

The name Alfred was the late 19th and early 20th century, a popular first name in Germany. In the 1910s he even belonged in a year to the ten most popular boys' names. In the fifties, his popularity declined sharply since the early seventies, he is hardly in use.
