History

The transition was already used during the Roman period and provided the main link between Augusta Raurica and Vindonissa represents the Roman road was unlike today a little further north of Effingen about Oberbözberg to Stilli. A short section at Effingen remained to this day. The Tacitus in his Histories mentioned Mons Vocetius likely to have been a high probability of Bözberg.

During the Middle Ages there were three different ways over the Bözberg, all of which had their origins in western Effingen. The northern followed the course of the old Roman road to the ferry in Lauffohr and Stilli, the average over the Stalden to Brugg, on the southern Gallenkirch and Linn to the ferry Birrenlauf ( Schinznach bath).

Finally, put the medium variant by about the Stalden. But this path was muddy, steep (up 20%) and for larger horse carts too narrow. Traders and travelers, therefore, took on their way from the Bernese Aargau in front Austrian Fricktal prefer a detour via the lower Aare Valley and the Rhine Valley in purchasing. At the insistence of Austria, the city of Bern built the road from after 1773. The opening took place in November, 1779.

Only a few benefited economically from the removed connection, including the horse owners in Bözen, Effingen and hornussen (opening services) and the tavern owners along the road. The population at large on the other hand, had Bözberg provide for the maintenance; this arduous task was taken over in 1859 by the Canton of Aargau.

After the opening of Bozberg railway line in 1875, the traffic decreased significantly, and the stagecoach course was set. By car the importance of Bözbergs increased after the Second World War. The road was widened and provided in the slopes with a third lane. 1995 almost 12,500 vehicles per day were counted on average. After the opening of Bözbergautobahn in 1996 the pass was freed from through traffic between Basel and Zurich. Today daily cross to around 3500 vehicles to pass.
