Bulgnéville
Bulgnéville is a commune with 1463 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Vosges in the Lorraine region; it belongs to the district Neufchâteau and is the capital ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Bulgnéville.
Geography
Bulgnéville is in the catchment area of the upper Meuse in the south west of Lorraine, near the spa towns of Vittel and Contrexéville. Immediately west of the town runs the French motorway A 31 ( Beaune - Luxembourg).
Neighboring communities of Bulgnéville are Sandaucourt and Auzainvilliers in the north, Mandres -sur- Vair in the east, in the southeast Contrexévillenear, Suriauville in the south, Saulxures- lès- Bulgnéville in the southwest and Vaudoncourt, Morville and Hagnéville -et- Roncourt in the northwest.
History
Bulgnéville is first mentioned in 1172 as Bagneole. A settlement already in Gallo- Roman times, however, is evidenced by archaeological finds. From the time of the Merovingian comes a cemetery. In the Middle Ages Bulgnéville was a fortress. Here the battle of Bulgnéville for the succession in the Duchy of Lorraine was held on July 2, 1431. The fort was demolished in the mid 17th century.
Bulgnéville was a barony of Des Salles family, which was raised in 1708 to the Margraviate ( Marquisat ) were among the 13 villages.
