The B 96 starts in Zittau on the city ring, where also the main road 99 starts, and then crosses Mittelherwigsdorf with crossing the Rietschebachs. Since 1964 there is a new concrete bridge due to increased traffic. This was associated with the elimination of five switchbacks at Landsberg. After low and Oberoderwitz the road continues over -inclusive, forest village and reaches the " Hubel houses " the territory of Ebersbach behind the main European watershed between the Baltic Sea ( land water) and North Sea (Spree). The Chaussierung of that road was carried out in the 1830s and formed an essential requirement for the operation of the driving post to different places. Since 1840 operated on their car regularly between Dresden and Zittau on Ebersbach ( construction costs of the municipality for road section within Ebersbach: 2733 pounds), since 1845 it wrong of Lobau after Rumburk. After the inauguration of the now disused railway line Zittau - Lobau 1848 Fahrpost of Dresden ended in Oberoderwitz. To the north it branches off and continues in a northwesterly direction through the district Luckauer Gießmann village and Rüdingsdorf and Zützen after Golßen continued. Here comes the highway 115 on the route of the B96, together they lead up to Baruth / Mark inside.

In a roundabout centrally located in Baruth State Road 96 from the main road 115 branches off and follows from then on the railway line between Berlin and Dresden to the north. By Baruth glacial valley and the Luckenwalder heath it goes Wunsdorf and from there to Zossen. In the village the B 96 and State Road 246 have common history, but the latter branches off near the railway station to the west, while the B96 continues further to the north. In Rangsdorf it intersects at a connection point with the Berlin ring road.

Intermediate place village and the city of Berlin, the B 96 is expanded four lanes. Through a new route to bypass the places Dahlewitz and Mahlow, district Glasow. Behind Glasow the main road runs along the old route to the city limits. There was the border crossing Mahlow / Lichtenrade, which was only passable for disposal vehicles for Berlin city cleaning companies during the division of Germany.

Berlin

The road in south-north direction through Berlin. From the southern border town bears the name Kirchhainer dam. From there, the B 96a branches, which should get the GDR era West Berlin. The B 96a applies only north of Berlin back on the B 96 The B 96 itself runs in the Berlin city area then on the light Damm, Marie Damm and later leads past a temple Damm at the former Tempelhof airport. Behind the square of the air bridge, the road will then continue as Mehring Damm. On the Halle Gate B branches off 96 towards the west and leads on both sides of the Landwehr canal along the shore as Hallesches / Reichpietschufer on the north side and Tempelhof / Schöneberg shore on the south side. Since March 26 2006, she is then sent north again through the Tiergarten tunnel under the city district at Potsdamer Platz, the government quarter and the main train station. At the time of the Wall, she ran as a relief road through the Tiergarten. Behind the Tiergartentunnel them as Heidestraße continues at Berlin- Spandau navigation canal, running on the Sellers Road, Miller Road, Fennstraße and finally on the Reinickendorfer road, then continue on the Mark Street, residence street, Lindauer Allee, Roedernallee and Oranienburger Straße / Oraniendamm. As Oranienburger Chaussee it runs in the district Frohnau for another three kilometers Berlin city area, then crosses in front of Hohen Neuendorf finally the border in the direction of Oranienburg.

Mehring Damm

In Birkenwerder the B 96a ( Clara-Zetkin -Straße) rejoins the B a 96 ( Main Street).

With completion of the new B 96 as a western bypass of Oranienburg in 2003, the traffic from the site was taken out. The old route through the center of Oranienburg was downgraded to municipal road. Since then, the B leads 96 ( in the direction north of Berlin, looking out at ) back at the exit Birkenwerder, the Highway 10 ( north Berliner Ring), the motorway junction Oranienburg and from there eleven kilometers than road running with three exits, partially on the former airfield of Oranienburg on the existing route of the B 96 at the junction of the road L 191 north of Oranienburg. A further extension to the north is planned. However, the current route the place Nassenheide cuts in two parts, calls for a citizens' initiative an amended route. The road continues along Tesch village and mountain lions.

Lowenberg - Fürstenberg

Gransee is bypassed since the 1960s in the outskirts, the B96 has no real bypass here, only the center is not crossed. 2005/2006 in the northeastern local area, a roundabout was established to replace or previously existing clinker paving by asphalt. A true bypass of Gransee is planned, it should be passed to the east at the site. In Dannenwalde a ramshackle bridge was replaced in 2006 after several months roadblock by a new bridge in the same place. Until then, the speed over the old bridge at 30 km / h was limited, the bridge was held in a makeshift operation. During construction, the traffic was out west on Neuglobsow. In Fürstenberg / Havel, the B 96 leads directly through the center and is therefore limited to 30 km / hr. After protests east of Fürstenberg against a leading over former concentration camp site bypass is now a city near bypass along the railway line in conversation.

Mecklenburg -Western Pomerania

Neustrelitz - Neubrandenburg - A 20

In Neustrelitz already existing in parts bypass 2005/2006 has been completed. The B 96 branches now south of the district Neustrelitzer Strelitz Alt - east and reaches north of Neustrelitz after crossing the railway line Neustrelitz -Warnemünde the original route. The further course via Usadel, where scenic views of the Tollensee are possible to Neubrandenburg. The center of this city is enclosed by an annular counter-clockwise one-way street with three or four lanes. The Neubrandenburg ring is the busiest road East Germany, with a frequency of 70,000 vehicles per day. To the east of Neubrandenburg it runs jointly with the B 104 The course of the B 96, the Highway 20 brought up to the junction Neubrandenburg East and interrupted. The former course of Neubrandenburg to Greifswald was downgraded by the completion of the A 20 to the road L 35. On the former section 96a of Greifswald to Stralsund today runs the B 105

The Federal Highway 96n ( Abbreviation: B 96n ) was a federal highway in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern Stralsund and linked with the highway 20 She started there at the connection point and ended Stralsund in Stralsund. The B 96n served as a bypass to the south of Stralsund. She was managed as dual carriageway and four lanes along the entire length. Officially, it was signposted along its entire length as B 96.

Only in December 2005, the plan approval process was initiated for the continuation of the main road to Bergen, which is to be expanded dreistreifig.

The B96 is continued at the motorway junction developed junction Stralsund. From here it is extended to a two-lane dual carriageway motorway connections as of Stralsund and the island of Rügen. Between the also called " Pommerndreieck " junction of the A20 and junction Brandshagen (B 105), it has no hard shoulder. Periodically emergency stopping bays are erected. This section was reported until 2006 when B 96n. Between the junction Brandshagen and the new Stralsund bridge the B96 is predominantly developed with highway cross section including hard shoulder. Because of the missing expansion on the island of Rügen, this section is jam -prone, especially in the summer months. In Stralsund B since October 2007, 96 crosses with the Rügenbrücke the Stralsund. This 2831 meter high bridge is next to the old Rügendamm the second crossing of the Baltic Straits. The new building is equipped with three lanes. An electronic traffic control are depending on traffic free the middle strip for a direction of travel.

From the new junction Altefaehr the B96 runs up to Sassnitz largely along its original course. Especially in the summer months here form jams up to 20 kilometers in length. Especially astonished pregnant this is the junction Samtens. During the barriers closing times of a level crossing on a side street leading- the traffic is completely stopped on the non-affected them B 96 hourly for several minutes.

Construction of the B 96: Altefaehr - Bergen auf Rügen

For this reason, a new highway to be built from the bridgehead of the new Rügen bridge to Bergen. The road will run largely parallel to the current route of the B96, but have a much higher capacity than the old route, as it is consistently planned with three lanes and crossing-free. The congestion prone Ortsdurchfahrten in Rambin and Samtens be replaced by ring roads.

Ahead there was massive criticism from conservationists, they consider the project as oversized and pushed for an expansion of the existing line instead of a complete new building. Construction was carried several complaints of environmental organizations BUND and NABU delayed.

On 15 June 2011, the first sod in the implementation section Altefaehr - Samtens was. The planned cost of this section amount to about 90 million euros, of which 39 million will be borne by the federal government and 49 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund. It was first calculated with significantly lower cost; the cost increases are due to the delayed start of construction and the additional construction of green and wild bridges on the route. The completion has been postponed to mid-2015.

By the construction, the proponents hope an end to the numerous jams, improvements for business and tourism, the discharge of residents from through traffic and less pollution and more safety for all road users.

Importance

From Oranienburg to the Berliner Ring and Highway 111 to the junction Neubrandenburg -east to the A 20 runs the European Route 251 on the track. After the interruption caused by the A 20, the European Route 22 and E 251 are performed up to the junction of the B 96b at Borchtitz on Rügen on the B 96 from the junction of Stralsund.

The supra-regional importance as a highway between Berlin and the northern part of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern is 20 has decreased since the completion of the motorway connection via the motorways A 11 / A. Nevertheless, it is used as an escape route by car drivers, also because the route of the A 11 / A 20 is much longer. Even before the introduction of the HGV toll the B96 was by the truck traffic as particular strain. This situation has worsened since the introduction of the toll once again in 2005.

History and previous history

Chausseebau in the 19th century

To facilitate trade and transport, the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg -Strelitz began in 1834 with the expansion of its road network. In the years 1838 and 1839 the road from Neubrandenburg on Neustrelitz was built to the border with Dannenwalde. 1845 was the road from Neubrandenburg to Old Treptow.

Oranienburg and Gransee - - On May 1, 1839, sections of Berlin were border officially put into operation on May 15, 1839 followed the link interface Lowenberg - Gransee.

Earlier routes and designations

The origin of today's B 96 is the introduction of " highways " ( BSS ) by the Weimar Republic on 17 January 1932. Here, a consecutive numbering was in Germany for the first time introduced. The FVS 96 proceeded in this source network unlike today south of Finsterwalde about Elsterwerda, Big Grove, Radeburg, Dresden and Dippoldiswalde to the frontier at Cínovec George field. After converting the FVS- roads in imperial roads ( as of 1934; abbreviation R), today's course has been introduced. In the GDR, the name of highway was re- introduced, but the abbreviation F for " highway " assigned instead of the abbreviation FVS. The former F 96 was the longest highway in the GDR and the same time a major route north-south direction. To ensure a consistent course in East Berlin, 1961 96 changed after the construction of the Berlin Wall from East Germany in the course of the then F to be between Mahlow on the southern and birch Werder on the northern outskirts of Berlin just over DDR - mainly led East Berlin territory. This section now bears the name of B 96a, because of the largely in West Berlin lying, called since 1949 B96 course was not covered by the DDR internal change and after the date of German reunification again with the separated by the boundary DDR sections was summarized. Today the West Berlin section, no longer fully the existing until 1961 during which crossed the East Berlin belonging to the district center, but contains since the 1980s, the scale as detour route through the Tiergarten, which has been known since the 1960s, federal highway E been. South of Berlin, the F 96 was different from today's course over the places Klaus village and Mellensee (both now the town Am Mellensee ) diverted, as was the site of the seat of the High Command of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany on the actual course between Wunsdorf and Zossen and was correspondingly restricted.

Originally, the main road of Neubrandenburg in the north on the current road L 35 via Old Treptow, Jarman and Greifswald to Stralsund on the Hanseatic route. Between Greifswald and Stralsund, a new parallel line was 1964-1967 in addition to the time existing R 96, which was partially cobbled and narrow through-roads, west of this built to ensure the tourist traffic to the island of Rügen. This was also the name of B 96a to the end of the GDR, the name F96a, from 1990 and until the end of the 1990s. Thereafter, from the B 96a B 96 and the route of the old F 96 local link road. Since the reorganization of the federal roads in the area Greifswald Neubrandenburg 2006 B 96 between Brandshagen and Greifswald bypass a part of the B 105
