Camogli

Camogli ( Ligurian Kamùgi or Camoggi, in Genoese dialect Camuggi ) is a municipality with 5399 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Genoa. Camogli is located on the west side of the peninsula of Portofino, on the Golfo Paradiso at the Riviera di Levante. The name means " house of wives " (casa delle Mogli ). Camogli is one of the largest part of the Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino, as well as part of the Marine Protected Area of Portofino.

Camogli was a sizable port city in the late Middle Ages. In the heyday of the fleet Camoglis from hundreds of tall ships existed. It was called the " city of a thousand white sails ". 1798, the city a large contingent of the Napoleonic fleet, which was beaten in Egyptian waters of the Nile Admiral Nelson. This prestigious Naval College, founded in 1874 Cristoforo Colombo is the nautical tradition as well as a retirement home for captains. In 1880, the city had ( out of a population of 12,000 ) 500 patented ship captains. The former fishing village of Camogli, which mainly depends on tourism today is known for its colorful houses, which are hidden behind the beach. The colors helped once the fishermen of Camogli to regain its port easier after the catch.

To date, nationally known are the first division of the domestic water polo swimming clubs RN Camogli, which won several Italian championships after the Second World War. A sea-front swimming pool is one of the most important buildings of recent date.
