Coat of arms of Burkina Faso

The coat of arms of Burkina Faso in use since August 1997. It shows in the middle of a plate in the style of the national flag. Behind this shield intersect two spears, whose upper ends are surrounded by a scroll with the inscription Burkina Faso, the country name. The other ends are in turn surrounded by a scroll bearing the motto Burkina Faso: " Unité, Progres, Justice " (French, "unity, progress, justice "). Right and left of the scroll are each to see a Hirseähre. There is a book about the middle of the lower band saying. And for supporters act two silver stallions.

The silver stallions symbolize the honor valence of the Burkinabe people, the spears, the determination to defend the fatherland and the open book the pursuit of knowledge. For the goal of self-sufficiency through food are millet ears, which were already before 1997 in the arms and go back to a motto of Thomas Sankara: " soyons Burkinabé consommons Burkinans " ( corresponding translation: "a citizen of Burkina Faso, let consume us Burkinabe products ").

Historic Coat of Arms

With the renaming of Upper Volta to Burkina Faso as a result of sankaristischen Revolution 1984, new national symbols were created, including a new flag and a new coat of arms. While the flag today is in use, the "revolutionary" coat of arms was abolished with the second revision of the constitution of the Fourth Republic in 1997 and replaced by the now used. The coat of arms of the revolutionary period is based - for obvious reasons - graphically strongly to the tradition of socialist republics.

The coat of arms shows a Kalashnikov is crossed with a hoe over a book, framed by a stylized gear and millet spikes that persist in today's coat of arms. The top section is a red star. The symbolism leaves no doubt as to the ideological orientation of the Revolution of 1984. It was a socialist revolution in a country which had droughts (notably in the late 1970s in the Sahel ) to fight, and in the farmers and soldiers, the most important pillars of represent society or should represent. The lower termination is a scroll with the inscription: " La patrie ou la mort - nous vaincrons " (French for "Fatherland or death - we will prevail ").
