Florina (regional unit)

The Regional District of Florina (Greek Periferiaki Enotita Florina ) is the northernmost of the four regional districts of the Greek region of western Macedonia with the eponymous capital of Florina. Florina was founded in 1915 after the Second Balkan War as a prefecture and lost the self- management by the administrative reform of 2010. Since then the area is sending nine MPs in the westmakedonischen Regional Council, has also but no political significance. Florina includes the municipalities Amyndeo, Florina and Prespa.

Geography

The area Florina is the northwestern region of Greece. It has at its nordwestlichstem point on the tri-border region of Albania, Greece and Macedonia, which was located on the land bridge between the large and small Prespa. The northwest of the area is dominated by the landscape of the Prespa lakes. The southern part of Lake Prespa small mostly to Greece and to a lesser extent with Albania, the Great Prespa Lake north of this location belongs to a small part to Greece and Albania and to a greater extent to Macedonia. Both lakes are separated only by a narrow land bridge. The Prespa lakes, especially the small, are known for diversity of its flora and fauna. Therefore, the entire region is a nature reserve, the Greek part of the area is a national park ( Ethnikos Drimos Prespon ).

The lakes are separated from the rest of the area by mountain massifs. To the east of the Prespa lakes separates the massif of Varnous from the plain of Florina from the central and northern part of the area. South of Varnous and southeast of the Prespa lakes, the second largest mountain Florina, the Verno rises with 2,128: m height between the mountain chains which pass road over Pisoderi of Florina leads to the Prespa lakes or to Kastoria or Krystallopigi and on to Albania. The Verno massif identified the field in its central part to the south east in the direction from Kastoria. The latter extends west into the Verno in the area of ​​Florina Prefecture. South of the Prespa lakes of Triklario separates the plain from around the Prespa lakes of the valley of Krystallopigi. The valley of Aliakmona Creek runs from the pass at Pisoderi by Kotas ( there Krystallopigi Tees Valley from ) and then further to Kastoria.

The central part of the area is particularly in the northern part of Macedonia in the direction of a plane. The town of Florina is located on the western edge of the area directly in front of the eastern foothills of the Massif Varnous. From Varnous massif down the river Sakoulevas flows through the town of Florina. The plain extends north to the border with Macedonia, east to the town and the western foothills of the Meliti Vora ( Kaimakchalan ), the highest mountain in the prefecture with 2,520 m ( also one of the five highest mountains in Greece with known ski resort). The southeastern boundary of the plain of Florina is located in the village of Vivie. A number of smaller mountains and hills between the foothills of Vora and Verno let free the pass of Klidi, which connects the plain of Florina with the level of Eordaia.

In the south of the area there is the northern part of the plain of Eordaia. The second largest town of Florina, Amyndeo, is located in this area. In the southeast of the regional district on the northern edge of the plain of Eordaia is the Petre's Lake, only slightly further east of Vegoritida Lake, one of the largest lakes in Greece. There are 2 more (smaller) lakes, the Zazari Lake and the Cheimaditis Lake on the western boundary of the northern part of the plain of Eordaia. South of this area is continuing the level of Eordaia in the territory of the former prefecture of Kozani. In the southwest of the area on the western edge of the plain of the Eordaia Klisoura Pass allows passage between the southern and southeastern flank of the Verno and the north and north-east flank of the Askio of Amyndeo to Kastoria.
