Köthen (district)

The district Köthen / Anhalt was a county in the eastern center of the federal state of Saxony -Anhalt. Neighboring districts were in the north of the county Beautiful Beck and the district of Anhalt -Zerbst, and the independent city of Dessau, in the eastern district of Bitterfeld, in the south of the county hall and to the west the district of Bernburg. The county was on the basis of a district reform in Saxony- Anhalt in the newly formed district of Anhalt -Bitterfeld on 1 July 2007.

Geography

The district Köthen / Anhalt was near Magdeburg in the center of the triangle Magdeburg - Dessau - Halle ( Saale). In the north it bordered on the Elbe. Near the Elbe is the Wulfener break, a wetland area with numerous endangered birds.

History

The Principality of Anhalt- Köthen existed since 1603. Johann Sebastian Bach served here for a while as a conductor. 1665 was combined with Anhalt- Plötzkau and 1806 Duchy. 1847 was divided between Anhalt- Dessau and Anhalt- Bernburg, Anhalt- Köthen in 1863 came fully to the Duchy of Anhalt. At the same time the district Köthen was formed out of it. After 1918 the Duchy of Anhalt The Free State of Anhalt had become, in 1932 the district of Dessau- Köthen was formed from the districts of Köthen Dessau. 1934, the city of Köthen was acyclic.

After 1945, the district of Dessau- Köthen first belonged to the newly formed province of Saxony -Anhalt, from 1947, the state of Saxony- Anhalt. In a county government reform in 1950, a district Köthen was formed from the district of Dessau- Köthen and the city district Köthen again.

1952 came in the GDR into a comprehensive district reform, in which the countries were resolved among other things, and were replaced by districts. The district Köthen were doing parts of the territory to the new circles Graefenhainichen, Bernburg and from Bitterfeld. From the remaining part of the district, the new district Köthen was together with communities of the old county Beautiful Beck formed, which was assigned to the newly formed district hall.

After the reunification of the two German states the district Köthen in 1990 re-established state of Saxony- Anhalt to the district Köthen was. Until 2007 was the official name District of Köthen / Anhalt, although the county town bore the letters Köthen (Anhalt).

When the district reform of 2007 in Saxony -Anhalt Köthen the county was merged with the district of Bitterfeld and parts of the district of Anhalt- Zerbst to the new district of Anhalt -Bitterfeld.
