Krasnouralsk

Krasnouralsk (Russian Красноуральск ) is a town in Sverdlovsk Oblast (Russia) with 24,980 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city lies on the eastern edge of the Ural Mountains, about 180 km north of the Oblasthauptstadt Yekaterinburg, at the brook Kuschaika, near its confluence with the Salda. The climate is continental.

The city is the Krasnouralsk Oblast administratively subordinated directly.

Krasnouralsk is (only freight) with Verkhnyaya Tura ( station Verkhnaya ) at the railway Kushva ( Goroblagodatskaja station ) via a spur track - Serov connected. The name of the station in the city is Med (Russian Медь for copper).

History

The first settlement of the area of the present-day city was made in 1832 with the discovery of gold placer deposits, but which proved to be not efficient. The Bogomolov - chalcopyrite deposit Later in the 19th century here but discovered (after the prospectors Bogomolov, on whose territory it is located ). 1925 began the development and construction of a copper smelter with associated settlement Bogomolstroi ( Богомолстрой ). In 1929 it was renamed the Uralmedstroi ( Уралмедьстрой ). In the city the POW camp consisted of 376 German prisoners of war of World War II.
