Nizhnyaya Tura

Nischnjaja Tura (Russian Нижняя Тура ) is a town in Sverdlovsk Oblast (Russia) with 22,006 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city lies on the eastern edge of the Ural Mountains, about 250 km north of the Oblasthauptstadt Yekaterinburg, on the river Tura. In the immediate vicinity, only about 5 km to the west, joins Nischnjaja Tura virtually seamlessly by far the larger, formerly secret and today still " closed" city Lesnoi (formerly Sverdlovsk -45).

The climate is continental.

The city Nischnjaja Tura is the Oblast subordinated administratively directly. The city's 21 villages under its total of 6,888 inhabitants, so that the total population of the administrative unit " city Nischnjaja Tura " is 29 529 (calculated 2009).

Nischnjaja Tura is located on one at the station Wyja of the railway Kushva ( station Goroblagodatskaja ) - Serov branching 13 km long branch line ( freight only ).

History

Nischnjaja Tura originated in 1754 as a settlement at the same state ironworks. 1824 were in the surrounding area, discovered in the rivers Is, Wyja and Tura, placer deposits of gold and platinum, which guaranteed time, more than half of the funding of these metals in the Ural region. In the mid-19th century ( 1852-1862 ) there was in place a weapons factory, which later ( 1889-1893 ) converted into a prison for political prisoners and was known as the key stronghold of the Urals. The revolutionaries Yakov Sverdlov, Fyodor Sergeyev ( Artyom ) and Ivan Malyshev were exiled to Nischnjaja Tura.

Despite its earlier relative importance of the place was not until 1949 city law.

The town's name refers to the location on the river Tura; nischnjaja is lower, in contrast to the city Verkhnyaya Tura / Upper Tura.

Economy

Nischnjaja Tura 's administrative and commercial center of an important mining area. In addition to appropriate enterprises of mechanical engineering, the electric equipment manufacturing and the construction industry ( mineral wool), there are forestry and food industry.

Near the city, the Lower - Tura - thermal power plant is located ( Нижнетуринская ГРЭС / Nischneturinskaja GRES ). At the city pass by oil and gas pipelines that have control and pumping stations here.
