Lee Trevino

Lee Buck Trevino ( born December 1, 1939 in Dallas, Texas) is an American professional golfer. He is one of the most colorful personalities who has ever produced professional golf.

The Early Years

As a child of poor Mexican immigrants, Lee was raised by his mother and his grandfather, a gravedigger. His father, he never learned to know. For the schooling he could only occasionally find time, but he had already from the age of 5 years working in the cotton fields. For golf he came when his uncle gave him some old golf balls and a rusty bat. From then on, the boy every minute spent on the adjacent golf courses. Already at the age of 8, he started as a caddy and a few years later that was his job. In addition, he worked as a shoeshine boy and so came to a weekly wage of about 30 dollars. As a caddy he could also play on three practice holes and with old worn-out thugs after work. Year after year, Trevino hit at least 300 balls per workout and improved his skills. At 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served four years. In the last 1 ½ years he spent a lot of time on the golf course with officers.

The Professional Career

1967 Lee Trevino began on the PGA Tour and already in the first season of Rookie of the Year ( best newcomer ) was chosen. A year later, he won his first major, the U.S. Open. Despite this rapid rise in the golfing elite, many regarded his success as a matter of pure luck, because his (self- learned ) momentum seemed unnatural and cramped. But soon silenced his critics, since Trevino's success curve went straight up. In 1971 he won another two majors and the Canadian Open, then still considered secret fifth major. Trevino won in the early 1970's tournament victory to win the tournament and was the strongest competitor of Jack Nicklaus. After winning another major, the PGA Championship in 1974, however, overtook him a heavy blow. He was struck by lightning and suffered this injury to the back and spine. A vertebra had it surgically removed and the subsequent complaints disabled his game. Nevertheless, it still managed Trevino, to keep for another decade in the world rankings, and won in 1984, at the age of 44 years, again the PGA Championship, his sixth overall major.

In his career, Trevino managed to win 29 PGA Tour events, won more than 20 other international tournaments and won on the PGA Senior Tour, now the Champions Tour, another 29 wins, including four senior majors. He played for the USA in the Ryder Cup six times and has an impressive personal match record of 17 wins with 6 draws and 7 defeats.

In addition to his golfing skills Trevino is one of the most approachable, talkative and humorous golfers on the PGA Tour. His original sayings are frequently quoted by the media. Equally popular is Trevino's ability, the most incredible golf shots out to conjure.

Trevino has established numerous initiatives that provide many needy Americans of Mexican descent help and support.
