Lefkada (regional unit)

Lefkada (Greek Periferiaki Enotita Lefkada, Lefkas also older Λευκάς ) is one of the five regional districts of the Greek Ionian Islands. It consists of the two communities Lefkada and Meganissi and sends four deputies to the regional council, has also, however, no political significance.

In addition to the main island of Lefkada, the area includes the island group of Tilevoides ( Τηλεβόιδες ), namely, Meganissi and located off the east coast of Lefkada " Princes 'Islands ' ( Pringiponisia: Skorpios, Skorpidi, Madouri, Sparti, Thilia, Kythros and Cheloni ), also Kalamos and Kastos and some other islets.

The area of the prefecture was created largely from the 1797 founded under Napoleonic rule Territory Ithaque and came (next to the prefecture of Kefalonia ) together with Ithaka Lefkada Prefecture as to the connection of the Republic of the Ionian Islands to Greece in 1864. Ithaca in 1866 the Kefalonia Prefecture connected, in 1899 it came back to Lefkada. In 1909 Lefkada (without Ithaka ) is a province of the Corfu Prefecture, 1946 with Ithaca a province of Preveza Prefecture. 1953 Finally, the Prefecture of Lefkada was re-established and was in this form until 2010. With the administrative reform of 2010, the prefecture was dissolved and transferred its powers to the Ionian Islands and the newly assigned communities.
