Omasuyos Province

Omasuyos is one of twenty provinces in the central western part of the department of La Paz in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location

The province is located on the Bolivian Altiplano and is bordered to the north by the province Muñecas, in the northwest of the province of Heliodorus Camacho, the west and south of Lake Titicaca, in the southeast of the province of Los Andes, and in the north- east by the province Larecaja.

The province extends between about 15 ° 47 'and 16 ° 12' south latitude and 68 ° 27 ' and 69 ° 00 ' west longitude, its extent from east to west is 45 kilometers from north to south, 40 km.

Population

The population of the province Omasuyos has increased by about a third in the past two decades:

41.3 percent of the population are younger than 15 years. (1992)

The literacy rate in the province is 68.5 percent. (1992)

62.8 percent of the population speaking Spanish, 0.6 percent speak Quechua, Aymara and 96.3 percent. (1992)

63.1 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 84.4 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

82.3 percent of the population are Catholics, 12.6 percent are Protestant (1992).

The Omasuyos province is divided since 2010 into the following six counties ( bolivian: municipios ):

  • Municipio Achacachi - 54 865 inhabitants ( 2001 census )
  • Municipio Ancoraimes - 15,199 inhabitants
  • Municipio Huarina (since 2005 an independent municipality ) - 7,626 inhabitants
  • The municipality of Santiago de Huata (since 2009 an independent municipality ) - 8,012 inhabitants
  • Municipio Huatajata (since 2010 an independent municipality ) - 2,231 inhabitants
  • Municipio Chua Cocani (since 2010 an independent municipality ) - 6,782 inhabitants
