Pourrières

Pourrières ( Provençal Pourrièro or Porrièra ) is a commune with 4493 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Pourrières is located on the border of the Bouches -du -Rhône to the east of the Montagne Sainte- Victoire on the hillside above a built in wine level, which is watered by the Arc. The highest point is located in the south of the municipality in the area of Mont Aurélien. The town center is located 3 km north of the Route Nationale 7 From here there are 27 km to Aix -en- Provence and 16 km to Saint -Maximin- la -Sainte -Baume.

History

In the year 1145 the city under the name De Poreriis appear in the sources.

Traditionally, the name is etymologically traced back to the Latin expression Campi Putridi, which refers to the mass grave, the Gaius Marius left, after he defeated the Cimbri and the Teutons in the year 102 BC. Perhaps the name comes from but back to the Provençal word for leeks PORRI.

Pourrières was dominion of the viscounts of Marseille, later, in the 16th century, it belonged to the Glandevès.

Population

Pourrières has seen a dramatic, usually above-average population growth in the second half of the 20th century. Late as 1962 lived less than 1000 people in the locality. In 1999, the number of residents had more than quadrupled. The strong growth of the population holds at a slower pace until today.

Attractions

  • The Place de Château is a popular vantage point.
  • The parish church of Saint Trophimus was built in the 14th century and enlarged in the 18th century.
  • The former convent of Paulaner interior was created in 1568 and is now classified as a Monument Historique Inscrit. The robust structure is flanked by a tower, which was added to the former village church of Notre -Dame-du -Bois.

  • The father's Paul Cézanne's family is from Pourrières.
  • Germain Nouveau (1851-1920), poet, friend of Verlaine and Rimbaud lived in Pourrières.
  • The writer Joseph Pascal (1886-1982) was a teacher in Pourrières.
  • The pianist Jacqueline Eymar (1922-2008) lived since 1984 in Les Hermentaires, community Pourrières.

Economy

The community is dominated by agriculture. There are grown wine, grain and melons. The wine cooperative and independent wineries produce wines of AOC Côtes de Provence Sainte Victoire.
