To his NHL debut, he came in the season 1966/67, at the Montreal Canadiens. Often he played in the farm team for the Houston Apollos in the Central Professional Hockey League, but he had 19 missions in goal for the Canadiens, which was usually guarded this season of Charlie Hodge and Gump Worsley.

After defending the title in 1969 Worsley suffered in the season 1969/70 a nervous breakdown. Vachon played about 60 games but the team missed the playoffs. With Ken Dryden the Canadiens had in the 1971/72 season a strong young goalkeeper and Vachon muffed his first third of the season with four goals against. He was exchanged and asked after the game about a transfer.

In exchange for Denis DeJordy and three other players, he was released to the Los Angeles Kings in November 1971. This was his life and his career a big boost. At the end of the season he was defeated narrowly Bobby Clarke in the election to the Hart Memorial Trophy.

A career highlight was the Canada Cup in 1976 dar. Ken Dryden and Bernie Parent were not available and so he was appointed Gerry Cheevers and Glenn Resch in the squad of the Canadian team. With an excellent performance it was used in all games and helped his team to win the tournament. In addition, he was named Most Valuable Player.

For the 1978/79 season he moved to the Detroit Red Wings. After two seasons in Detroit, he spent another two years to the Boston Bruins, after which he ended his active career.

For the season 1983/84 season he returned as general manager back to the Kings. While he exercised this office until 1992, he took over again and again in the short term, the position of the coach.
